About the job

Main missions

Your responsibilities include:

1) Geospatial Data Analysis & Modeling



Develop and implement machine learning models for analyzing satellite and aerial imagery Extract insights from Earth observation data to support risk assessment and underwriting decisions Build computer vision pipelines for detecting and classifying features in geospatial imagery Apply statistical and computational methods to large-scale geospatial datasets Create predictive models combining satellite data with climate, demographic, and risk indicators

2) Computer Vision Development



Implement and fine-tune deep learning models for image segmentation and object detection Develop custom algorithms for feature extraction from multi-spectral and multi-temporal imagery Build validation frameworks to assess model performance on geospatial tasks Optimize computer vision models for accuracy and computational efficiency Work with pre-trained models (SAM, YOLO, ResNet) and adapt them for insurance applications

3) Data Processing & Engineering



Design and implement data processing pipelines for satellite and drone imagery Work with geospatial data formats (GeoTIFF, NetCDF, Shapefile) and coordinate systems Develop ETL processes for integrating multiple Earth observation data sources Implement data quality checks and preprocessing routines for imagery data Create efficient data storage and retrieval solutions for geospatial datasets

4) Research & Experimentation



Conduct exploratory data analysis on new Earth observation datasets Design and execute experiments to validate hypotheses about model performance and risk indicators Research state-of-the-art methods in remote sensing and computer vision Prototype innovative solutions combining physics-based models with machine learning Document findings and present insights to technical and business stakeholders

5) Collaboration & Communication



Work closely with ML engineers to transition models from research to production Collaborate with insurance domain experts to understand business requirements Participate in annotation campaigns and data labeling quality control Present analytical findings and model results to diverse audiences Contribute to technical documentation and knowledge sharing within the team

6) Tools & Technology Development



Build interactive visualization tools for exploring geospatial data and model outputs Develop Python libraries and modules for common geospatial analysis tasks Create Jupyter notebooks demonstrating analytical workflows and methodologies Implement automated testing and validation procedures for data science pipelines Contribute to the team's MLOps practices and experiment tracking systems

Expected skills & experience


We are looking for someone with the following experience and skills:

Experience

Master's degree in Computational Science, Physics, Computer Science, or related quantitative field Strong academic background from a top technical university (EPFL, ETH, or equivalent) 2-4 years of experience in data science, machine learning, or computational research Demonstrated experience with geospatial data analysis or Earth observation Background in physics or computational modeling is highly valued

Technical skills

Strong programming skills in Python with focus on scientific computing Proficiency with data science libraries: NumPy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, SciPy Experience with deep learning frameworks: PyTorch or TensorFlow Familiarity with computer vision libraries: OpenCV, PIL, scikit-image Knowledge of geospatial Python libraries: Rasterio, GeoPandas, GDAL, xarray Experience with visualization tools: Matplotlib, Plotly, Folium, or similar
