The Position
As the Head of Large Molecule Research (LMR), you will lead a critical function within Roche Pharma Research and Development (pRED), reporting directly to the Head of Therapeutic Modalities (TMo). You will oversee a global function of approximately 350 scientists located at our Penzberg site.In this high-visibility executive role, you are accountable for the entire lifecycle of protein therapeutics generation from initial target assessment through to entry-into-human studies. You will collaborate closely with the Head of Nucleic Acid Based Medicines and the Head of Small Molecule Research to deliver gene therapies and antibody-conjugates.


You will operate embedded within a global research and technical development environment, driving discovery research, external innovation, molecule characterization, process research, and program management.

Your Impact

Develop and implement the global large molecule strategy in alignment with Therapeutic Modalities and pRED's long-term objectives and in consultation with fellow leaders. Lead the end-to-end generation of protein therapeutics for Discovery and Translational Areas (DTAs), ensuring successful progression from target assessment to the start of clinical phases. Ensure the delivery of non-GMP material for preclinical studies and the manufacturing of GMP material for Phase I studies. Champion research excellence and the continuous advancement of core technologies to ensure the function remains at the forefront of innovation. Ensure highest standards in project and portfolio decisions and alignment with pRED portfolio strategy and ambitions. Spearhead innovative concepts and strategies for the identification of new therapeutic compounds. Manage the critical interface between LMR and pRED DTAs, and Pharma Technical to ensure the seamless transfer of projects and processes. Collaborate with the Leaders of Nucleic-Acid-Based Medicines and Small Molecule Research to deliver on gene therapies and complex antibody-conjugates. Ensure strict compliance with all industry regulations, safety guidelines, and Roche corporate standards across the function.

You are a strategic leader capable of holding joint accountability for the development of the modality strategy in pRED. You thrive in a collaborative environment, acting as a member of the Therapeutic Modalities leadership team and various governance committees. You are passionate about human potential. You will select, develop, and evaluate scientists and leaders to ensure the efficient operation and continuous development of the LMR function. You are dedicated to fostering a culture of safety, environmental protection, and regulatory compliance. Success in this role requires close collaboration with the Pharma Technical Development organization. You will actively manage the interface with Pharma Technical to guarantee the successful transfer of our innovations into tangible medical solutions.
