(a) increase understanding of relevant issues at the international level by involving them directly in the work of the Office and the application of ILO principles, programmes and strategies;

(b) gain practical experience with the ILO directly related to their field of study.

The internship programme is not intended to lead to a career in the ILO. There should be no expectation of further employment at the end of the internship.

Learning areas

As an intern, you will learn how ILS relate to human rights and the 2030 Agenda and engage in activities facilitating collaboration with a wide range of partners both within the ILO and with other UN entities. For example, you will discover how ILS as human rights are promoted through national and multilateral planning frameworks such as UNSDCFs with a view to advancing a rights-based approach towards the attainment of the SDGs including targets 8.5, 8.8 and 16.3. You will also learn and gain experience on how ILS are mainstreamed across the UN system in the seven thematic priorities of the C2A (sustainable development, gender equality, future generations, (environment) civic space, new frontiers (AI); crises and collective action).

You will be asked to participate in facilitating collaborations between the ILO supervisory bodies and UN human rights monitoring bodies including replies to requests for information, the organisation of joint meetings, the launching of common thematic analyses , etc.

Finally, you will learn how to use IT tools and collaborative platforms I order to foster communication and coordination among ILO specialists involved in various areas of work regarding human rights and labour rights across the ILO Headquarters and the field offices.

Required profile

The International Labour standards Department (NORMES) is responsible for acting as the secretariat supporting and servicing the supervisory bodies of the ILO which monitor the application of International Labour Standards (ILS) in the world of work. Due to the numerous synergies connecting the work of the ILO supervisory bodies to the human rights monitoring mechanisms of the UN, NORMES regularly facilitates contacts and collaboration among the ILO bodies and UN mechanisms. NORMES is also responsible for promoting coherence and cooperation on ILS across the ILO at HQ and field level including in the context of collaboration with other UN entities at HQ and country level notably. In the context of the 2030 Agenda and the repositioning of the UN Development System, and important priority is the mainstreaming of ILS and the comments of the ILO supervisory bodies in Common Country Analyses and Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks (CCAs and UNSDCFs). Progress in this field is monitored under the 2024-25 P&B indicator 1.2.2.

NORMES is engaged in several interagency networks which aim at promoting human rights and labour rights across the UN system. One of the most important ones is the Interagency Network under the UN Secretary General\\\'s Call to Action for Human Rights (C2A) . In this context, NORMES coordinates an internal network of ILO staff across HQ and the field. The role of NORMES is to provide a common platform for information sharing on activities within the ILO and between the ILO and other UN entities which relate to labour rights as human rights.

Education

International labour law, human rights, international relations, development studies or a related field.

The candidate should be enrolled in their final year of graduate degree programme or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 year ago (mandatory).

Experience

e.g. any relevant work experience and knowledge of IT would be an advantage .

Languages

e.g. working (both oral and written) knowledge of English is essential.

Competencies

Selection process:

Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), hiring departments will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster.

If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.

Stipend:

As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2450 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2450 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense. In addition to the amounts referred above, each intern shall receive the amount of CHF45 per month, or the equivalent amount in the currency in which the monthly stipend is paid, which is a contribution from the Office towards the cost of medical insurance to cover the period of the internship.

Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
