Phd Laboratory Of Particle Accelerator Physics (lpap)

Lausanne, VD, CH, Switzerland

Job Description

Mission

The

EPFL Laboratory of Particle Accelerator Physics

(LPAP) is looking for a PhD student to strengthen our interdisciplinary team focusing on the development and construction of a robust positron source and injector for the Future Circular Collider FCC-ee (FCC).

This PhD project will focus on the commissioning of the PSI positron production (P3) experiment and the development of a novel hybrid positron source scheme, both central to the FCC-ee injector design. Increasing the efficiency of positron generation and capture directly reduces the cost and complexity of the driver linac, lowers heat and radiation loads on the target, and enhances operational margins. Using the SwissFEL linac at PSI as a flexible driver, p-cubed will serve as a demonstrator for advanced target and capture concepts based on high-temperature superconducting (HTS) solenoid, large-aperture RF structures and advanced beam diagnostics. The PhD activities will include commissioning of the experiment, beam characterization, comparison of different target materials and geometries to boost positron yield, and exploration of hybrid concepts such as crystal pre-targets to reduce the heat load on the target. The results will provide essential input for the FCC-ee injector Technical Design Report. This work forms part of a broader effort to demonstrate the feasibility of a highly intense and polarised positron source for the Future Circular Lepton Collider (FCC-ee), carried out within the framework of the Swiss Accelerator and Technology Institute CHART (www.chart.ch)

Main duties and responsibilities

As a PhD student, you will be expected to:
Contribute to the commissioning of the PSI Positron Production (P) experiment, using the SwissFEL linac as a driver. Characterize positron beams and compare different target materials and geometry (e.g. conical targets) under experimental conditions. Investigate through studies, simulations and test innovative hybrid concepts for positron generation (e.g. crystal pre-targets). Provide input to the FCC-ee injector Technical Design Report. Disseminate results through scientific publications, conferences, and project reports. Participate in teaching activities at EPFL and contribute to student supervision.

Profile

MSc degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field. Strong interest in accelerator physics, beam dynamics, and experimental methods. Hands-on experience in accelerator operations, beam diagnostics, or high-power targets is an asset. Familiarity with numerical modeling tools (e.g., Geant4, Ansys, CST, beam dynamic tracking codes) is a plus. Programming skills (e.g. Python, MATLAB) for data analysis and modeling. Self-motivated, independent, and collaborative mindset. Excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken).

We offer

A stimulating and international research environment at two of Switzerland's leading scientific institutions (EPFL and PSI). Opportunity to perform state-of-the-art research contributing to the design of the next-generation positron sources and the Future Circular Collider (FCC-ee). Interdisciplinary training bridging experiment, computation, and advanced accelerator technologies. Collaboration with internationally renowned experts and close involvement in large-scale international projects. Competitive salary and excellent working conditions.
