This post is located in the in the Conference on Disarmament and Conference Support Branch, United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) in Geneva, Switzerland. The incumbent reports to the Head of Unit responsible for Humanitarian Disarmament Instruments. The incumbent will be responsible for the implementation of extra-budgetary activities in support of the Convention on Conventional Weapons (CCW), the Anti-personnel Mine Ban Convention (APMBC), the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) and the Political Declaration on Explosive Weapons in Populated Areas. Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties: o Serves as lead officer for the delivery of implementation support and assistance to States related to the CCW, APMBC, CCM and EWIPA. o Liaises with the donor and prepares related reports on the status of implementation of activities. o Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to disarmament issues, in general, and in particular as they affect the mandates for which the staff member is responsible. o Plans, directs and participates in workshops, seminars and other project activities in Geneva and abroad. o Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the area of disarmament and provides inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in the Secretariat. o Monitors relevant national and regional level political developments and provides advice to senior officials and colleagues. o Provides technical and substantive back up in the implementation of mandates of the office, branch or unit. o Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters. o Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organizations, government and non-governmental organizations. o Selects, classifies and stores in computerized databases information relating to the implementation of the CCW, APMBC, CCM and EWIPA. o Participates in missions to countries within assigned area of responsibility. o Participates in provision of secretariat services to conferences, meetings, and /or special missions. o Prepares meetings of the SG/DSG/USG with officials from countries under the Organization's purview. o Performs other related duties as required.
