Your role and responsibilities
Driven by global sustainability ambitions and major electrification trends, the mining industry is fundamentally changing. We predict that electrical energy will be a key resource shaping the mine operations of the future. In ABB Process Industries Business Line Mining we want to spearhead the smart electrification landscape for our mining industry customers, building on ultimate efficiency, reliability and productivity as the sustainability cornerstones.
In Business Line Mining we use MV and LV Drives offering purposeful solutions for mining customers. This includes, for example, ensuring efficient and safe grinding in grinding mills or orchestrating the drives that move conveyors belts. We aim to provide reliability with zero downtime, the best user experience and ultimate support to our customers throughout the mine lifecycle. This job opportunity enables you to shape this exciting offering, combining elements of a technical expert role, with tasks of technical product management and R&D project leadership. It provides you with global business exposure and empowers you to shape the future offering of Business Line Mining Drives applications.

Your main tasks will be:

• Technical roadmap ownership: You will be responsible for defining, optimizing, and maintaining the product specifications for our Drives application products. This includes making key technological decisions to ensure the products have a well-defined architecture and are easy to maintain. You will act as the primary contact in Research and Development (R&D) for Product Management and other external stakeholders, supporting them on product-related technical topics and ensuring that technical decisions align with the product business case and strategy. Additionally, you will follow global standards and embed them in our offering portfolio, including relevant regulations and standards such as HSE and cyber security. You will also support the life cycle management process to ensure that current and future market requirements are met.
• R&D project leadership: You will act as the overall R&D project manager, taking accountability for the end-to-end planning, coordination, and delivery of assigned projects within the Drive applications domain. You will own the backlog for product releases, ensuring that progress is monitored and controlled to achieve commitments and targeted milestones and gates. You will ensure that projects follow sound methodology and execution practices, align with the desired development model, and comply with applicable ABB internal directives and procedures as well as external standards. Additionally, you will oversee the patent screening process and protect intellectual property rights.
• Technical expert and developer: You will act as an expert on drives technology used in Business Line Mining Drives application products, continuously keeping up to date with the latest developments and trends in drives technology. Upon requirements and priorities, you will take on practical implementation or testing tasks in the target control platform. Additionally, you will drive ideation and technical innovation for the Mining Drives applications offering, gathering ideas from technical teams and evaluating them together with product management. You will particularly ensure that the product architecture is future-proof, and all new features are integrated in the offering with the right quality and maintainability, seamlessly embedding our solutions and service offering.
• Collaboration and informal leadership: You will be a key person to build a community of technical experts for mining drives application and drive cross-functional and cross-organizational collaboration. By connecting experts from the field, you will drive the global buildup of competency and ensure that best practices are known and followed, common technology approach is pursued, and synergies are created and utilized. Furthermore, you will be involved in communication with customers on the technical topics in your area of expertise, you will be preparing white papers and promoting technical excellence in your area internally and externally.

Qualifications for the role

• You have 5+ experience with industrial applications of drives, with strong practical know-how in drive control technology, drive system design and operation. Practical knowledge of ABB drives portfolio is a strong plus.
• You demonstrate strong technical leadership in your area of specialization.
• You bring experience and knowledge about product development, of the aspects of product maintainability, product compliance and management of product lifecycle (from business and technical perspective).
• You are a structured professional, able to communicate clearly and get your message across to various stakeholders.
• You create followership without a direct reporting structure.
• Curiosity and growth mindset are a must for growth in this dynamic role.
• Business fluency in English, strong presentation and communication skills, as well as strong relationship building ability are the enablers for the role.
