The Industrial Robotics Group (IRZ) at ETH Zurich and Inspire AG is a leading research unit tackling key challenges in robot-based manufacturing through innovation in computation, modeling, and system design. We employ advanced computational methods, machine learning, modeling, and custom hardware and software to continually test our solutions in various real-world industry projects.
In one of our ongoing projects, we are advancing robotic machining capabilities through the integration of secondary axes and improved force control. Your main task will be to design, build, and calibrate an end-effector that incorporates a milling spindle a feed axis and integrated force-torque sensing capabilities. A key objective is to redesign the final axis of the system to embed strain gauges that can accurately measure external forces during operation. Understanding and accounting for these external forces is critical to achieving high stiffness by control, enhancing performance during milling and drilling tasks. The resulting setup will be integrated into an industrial robot and validated under real machining conditions, pushing the boundaries of precision and responsiveness in robotic manufacturing.
We seek a dynamic and versatile intern with a mechanical engineering background and a hands-on attitude. The ideal candidate is keen to learn the intricacies of computational industrial robotics in a fast-paced research environment.
