Learning areas

As an intern in occupational safety and health, you will be exposed to a range of areas of work, gaining understanding about common and emerging occupational safety and health risks. You will also gain exposure and knowledge in regard to the tripartite governance structure of the ILO and its engagement in multilateral working groups and task forces related to OSH.

You would be gaining experience in working with specialists who are involved in tasks such as conducting literature searches, data collection and analysis, and working to support activities in a variety of occupational safety and health risk areas. The intern will work with specialists involved in developing global reports and research, organising promotional campaigns and backstopping development cooperation projects.

Specific duties will consist of the following:

• Support the preparation for the 2024 World Day for Safety and Health at Work campaign, including assisting with the development of promotional materials and the global event.

• Assist in the preparation of presentation material, fact sheets, briefs, and short reports in OSH as requested.

• Assist in responding to inquiries from ILO constituents and the public concerning the World Day for Safety and Health at Work.

• Assist in the development of content for the occupational safety and health topic portal on the ILO website in the three official ILO working languages (EN, FR, SP).

• Undertake any other occupational safety and health-related task requested by the hierarchy.

Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.

The intern will work under the direct supervision and guidance of the OSH Team Lead.

Required profile

LABADMIN/OSH, positioned within the Governance and Tripartism Department, assists member States in realizing the fundamental principle and right at work of a safe and heathy working environment, through the improvement of occupational safety and health (OSH) frameworks and the promotion of a preventative safe and healthy culture. It also supports member States in strengthening and modernizing labour administration and inspection. It promotes an exchange of good practices and initiatives to improve OSH, labour administration and inspection; it undertakes research on relevant topics, designs and manages relevant development cooperation projects, including provision of technical advice, drafting and revising OSH law and country profiles.

The Occupational Safety and Health team works on a broad portfolio, including biological risks, physical and ergonomic risks, sound chemical management, psychosocial risks and workplace health promotion. The team provides technical guidance to constituents, conducts thematic research and produces technical reports. It is involved in the organization of global and regional congresses, events and campaigns, as well as in global multilateral engagements concerning topics pertaining to OSH. This includes, notably the annual World Day for Safety and Health at Work campaign, involvement in interagency working groups and task forces, among other various engagements. The team also supports various development cooperation projects on OSH being implemented globally and in partnership with ILO field offices.

Education

The candidate should be enrolled in their final year of post-graduate degree programme or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 year ago, preferably in occupational safety and health, public health, health and policy, health communication, occupational psychology, social sciences or a related field.

Experience

Relevant work or research experience in occupational safety and health, occupational health law, public health or occupational psychology would be an asset.

Languages

Good command (both oral and written) of at least one of the ILO\\\'s official working languages (English, French, Spanish). Working knowledge of English (both oral and written) would be an advantage.

Competencies

Ability to work in an international, multicultural, and multilingual environment, good communication skills and be able to work in a team.

Selection process:

Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), hiring departments will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster.

If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.

Stipend:

As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2450 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2450 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense. In addition to the amounts referred above, each intern shall receive the amount of CHF45 per month, or the equivalent amount in the currency in which the monthly stipend is paid, which is a contribution from the Office towards the cost of medical insurance to cover the period of the internship.

Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
