Postdoctoral Position In Medicinal Chemistry

Zürich, ZH, Switzerland

Job Description

\\n The Computer-Assisted Drug Design team led by Professor Gisbert Schneider at ETH Zurich is in search of a postdoctoral candidate specializing in Medicinal Chemistry. This role is integrated into the research group and involves close collaboration with an SNF Sinergia project named \"Rational Small Molecule Inhibition of Dissemination (RaSMID) for pediatric brain tumors.\" The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of extension for an additional year.

Project background

Effective therapeutics precisely targeting the biological mechanisms that promote tumor progression are necessary for the development of efficacious anticancer therapies, in particular to restrict the metastatic spread of the tumor. The cytostatic and cytotoxic activities of existing anticancer drugs and experimental compounds have revealed additional druggable vulnerabilities in different tumors. Some of these findings are now translated into novel clinical treatment protocols for pediatric brain tumor patients. However, insufficient efficaciousness is a common problem, which may be the result of toxicity due to off-target activity or of a lack of drug specificity for the biological mechanism that is pathophysiologically relevant for tumor progression. In the RaSMID project, we address this problem by combining rational target-based compound design and discovery with phenotypic and functional screening to identify highly specific and selective molecular leads with well-defined biophysical and biological activities.

Job description

In this role, you will function within an interdisciplinary setting bridging the realms of chemistry and computer science. Your primary responsibility will involve the synthesis and analytical characterization of novel compounds generated through computer algorithms. You will focus on optimizing these compounds to achieve drug-like properties and desired biological effects. The project necessitates close collaboration with all ongoing research endeavors within the group, as well as with external researchers from various institutions. A strong team-oriented approach is essential, and actively supporting the objectives of fellow team members is a requisite part of the role. We are seeking candidates who are self-motivated, creative, well-organized, and maintain a clean and efficient work environment. Proficiency in the English language is expected to be excellent.

Your profile

The ideal candidate for this position should possess extensive expertise in small molecule organic synthesis and analytical techniques. They should also have a strong background in medicinal chemistry, encompassing skills in synthesis planning, retrosynthesis, compound analysis, and purification.

We are looking for an individual who is not only seasoned but also exhibits stability and reliability, consistently executing both routine tasks and innovative experiments with precision. Familiarity with computational chemistry is a plus. Knowledge in computational drug design methods, such as molecular modeling and machine learning, is also considered beneficial.

Furthermore, the candidate should be prepared to contribute to student supervision and provide assistance with teaching activities as needed.
